Jon Duncan aka Eugene Ukulele - Tasmania, Australia
EUGENE UKULELE's earliest memories are musical ones...
He was laughed out of choir rehearsals in primary school. He thought the recorder was cooler than the Grand Piano. His parents ran a disco and filled the house with the Bee Gees, Bach and Tom T. Hall. His first album was Kiss's 'Dynasty'. He stumbled through university with red eyes, hangovers and bleeding ears, hard earned in front of the Rollins Band's stage speakers. He was snubbed by Michelle Shocked backstage during a support gig, and so sought refuge in a hermit life in the bush: living off the grid in the cool shade of Pete Seeger and Jelly Roll Morton, daydreaming of Betty from The Archies, writing his own songs and gigging around Hobart and Launceston.
THEN, came the epiphany:
A sultry evening, summer 2007. After a sweaty gig Eugene put his two guitars to bed for the night, only to be awoken by the fragile cries of a baby soprano ukulele snuggled in between them. His ragged destiny was at last sealed.
He has since recorded 3 tasty uke albums featuring a unique blend of jazz-tinged standards, blues and old-time folk, and currently moderates the worldwide Ukulele Underground forum.
If you want an intimate show full of warmth, passion, humour, great music and weird facial expressions, EUGENE UKULELE is your man.

Des nouvelles de Jon et du PA mezzo # 26 ...
aaaah! Gerard!
the uke was delivered to me late this afternoon...maybe one hour ago.
since then I spend time breaking in the strings, stretching them out...and now playing
the ukulele is so beautiful in every way brother.
so mellow and warm. the tone is just lovely to me, so smooth and deep and rich for a short scale instrument.
and the craftsmanship...your craftsmanship is as perfect as it gets. the finish for example, amazing...
the neck join at the heel. everything.
I have some high class ukulele and guitar but this one...
this one is I think the sweetest of all. because the feel in my hands, so perfect, so light,
so well balanced. you are an amazing builder Gerard.
thank you so much mate. and also because we are friends, something more special to me.
and also, the surprise! YES! very grateful mate. thank you for the magazine.
the history of the Tour. amazing pictures and stories.
I hope we will keep in touch through these next times.
I hope that summer in France brings the best of things for you.
I continue to work with flowers,
and read, and write poetry and play music.
I think there is hope. at least, I hope there is.
